Fear the Brow: A Look at the Trademarks of the NBA's Next Big Thing

by Guest Blogger

The NBA is back! Since the end of last season, we have written about the impact of LeBron's return to Cleveland on the trademark world and the rebranding of several NBA franchises. One of the franchises rolling out a new name is the New Orleans Pelicans (formerly the New Orleans Hornets.

That franchise also happens to employ the NBA's next big thing: Anthony Davis AKA the Brow.

Anthony Davis

You may remember him leading the University of Kentucky to a championship in 2012 or Team USA to the gold medal this summer in the FIBA World Cup. Now, he looks to lead his new look team to the NBA playoffs. On opening night, he led the Pelicans to a 101-84 victory over the Orlando Magic with 26 points, 17 rebounds, and 9 blocks.

Clearly, Davis understands the importance of protecting the rim. He also understands the importance of protecting his intellectual property. To date, he has filed five trademark applications, three related to his famous facial hair:

ANTHONY DAVIS (U.S. Serial No. 85/643,436)

RAISE THE BROW (U.S. Serial No. 85/642,988)

AD23 (U.S. Serial No. 85/643,392)

FEAR THE BROW (U.S. Serial No. 85/643,417)

BROW DOWN (U.S. Serial No. 85/646,057)

The sky is the limit for Davis. Many believe that he will dominate the next decade in the NBA. Like LeBron and Michael Jordan before him, Davis is taking the initial steps to build a valuable brand around his unlimited potential.
