Bill Schulman, who currently practices in the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Service Group, is a Registered U.S. Patent Attorney trained as a Biologist. His practice focuses primarily on protecting inventions in the fields of biotechnology, life sciences, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, but he handles cases in many other fields including telecommunications, rail transportation, and protein crystallography. He has been counseling clients in intellectual property matters for more than 35 years.

Bill has deep experience in federal litigation involving all aspects of intellectual property and related fields, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and unfair competition.

Recent Assignments

Represents numerous companies in various fields with regard to their intellectual property needs.

Led a team of Stites attorneys in preparing and filing a Post Grant Review (PGR) which successfully invalidated most of the claims of US Patent No. 9,840,491 in the Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB). An Appeal of this decision by the patentee has been dismissed.

Successfully prosecuted an Inter Partes Reexamination which resulted in the complete invalidation of all claims of US Patent 6,454,902. This decision was affirmed by the PTAB, and confirmed on Appeal by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) in an opinion issued on May 26, 2020.

Served as patent counsel for Plaintiff in V. Mane Fils S.A. v. International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. in the Federal District Court of New Jersey, a litigation involving patent infringement of Plaintiff’s U.S. Patents 5,725,865 and 5,843,466 relating to cooling compounds. The case was settled favorably for Plaintiff who received a $40 million royalty payment from Defendant.

Served as local counsel and co-trial counsel for defendant in F.O.B. Instruments, Ltd. v. Krown Manufacturing, Inc. in Federal District Court of Maryland, a case involving patent and trademark infringement.

More Than Stites & Harbison

Bill was with the law firm of Larson & Taylor of Alexandria, Virginia, for more than 20 years, which followed his position as a Summer Associate for the law firm of Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto in New York City. Bill was a partner with Larson & Taylor for over ten years when they merged with Stites & Harbison in 2004.

Bill has been named an “IP Star” in both patent law and trademark law by Managing Intellectual Property magazine. He is a member of the Association of University Technology Mangers (AUTM) and regularly attends their annual meeting. Bill has been a speaker at the AUTM annual meeting, and previously facilitated the Biotechnology and Life Sciences Patent Prosecution Special Interest Group session at that conference.

Bill has participated in a number of civic and cultural organizations including Shakespeare in the Parque, a non-profit cultural arts organization in Alexandria, Virginia, for which he served as a donor and pro bono attorney. He has also been active with the Jefferson County Historical Society of Charles Town, West Virginia, as both a member and pro bono attorney.

Bill is an avid swimmer and hiker and also enjoys playing a spirited game of tennis or basketball when the weather is not too hot. He also spent many years working with the Alexandria Soccer Association where he served as a coach and referee.
