E-Verify for Federal Contractors Delayed
Related Information
The federal government has pushed back the effective date of a final rule requiring that certain federal contractors use the E-Verify system to assess employees' eligibility to work in the U.S. until May 21 to give the Obama administration a chance to review it.
Judge Alexander Williams Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland issued a paperless order granting an emergency motion seeking a 90-day stay in a suit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other trade groups filed in December against defendants that include the former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, which challenged the rule.
Forcing the defendants to file a substantive brief before the administration finishes its review of the rule would undermine that review, said the motion, which was filed by the government on Tuesday. The final rule stems from an executive order signed by former President George W. Bush in June, and it had originally been slated to take effect just days before President Barack Obama's inauguration.
