The Role of Accountable Care Organizations in the U.S.

Louisville Bar Association Bar Briefs, Vol. 10, No. 11, November 2010

What is the current solution for managing healthcare costs in the United States? Accountable Care Organizations or ACOs. While the ACO concept is not a new one, the term ACO became mainstream in June 2009 when it was discussed in the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission report as a way to reduce Medicare costs and improve healthcare. The ACO model became more of a reality when it was included in The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the healthcare reform law passed on March 23 of this year, as an integrated healthcare delivery system model that can be used to improve healthcare quality and lower healthcare costs.
