Conference Highlights:

  • The NALP Annual Education Conference remains the single largest, most comprehensive, and most well respected educational program in our profession. The programming offered covers all areas of our profession from recruiting and career counseling to professional development, diversity management, and more.
  • Specific sessions will target the current challenges members face due to difficult economic times, including lessons learned from the economic downturn, managing your recruitment or CSO team in a shifting environment, developing recruiting strategy in tough times, working with lawyers and students in distress, and easing the transition of deferred associates.
  • Two timely and engaging plenary sessions on the legal economy and on leadership in times of change: law firm economics expert Dan DiPietro of Citi Private Bank will explore recent law firm financial performance and the future of the legal economy, and Chris Simmons of PricewaterhouseCooopers will share leadership lessons for NALP members from the accounting industry
  • Four three-hour in-depth, interactive workshops will each fully explore one of the following topics: emotional intelligence for leaders; how to prevent and work with acute lawyer distress; skills for high stakes presentations; and how to strengthen diversity leadership through emotional intelligence.
  • You will have opportunities to network with representatives of peer institutions through a conference mentor program, the regional lunch meetings, the diversity reception, luncheons for public service and experienced professionals members, and more than a dozen meetings of other sections.
  • You will learn about innovative practices and ideas that you can implement upon your return to directly benefit your organization.
  • The conference provides an opportunity to learn from consultants without having to pay consultant fees - 26 consultants are participating as faculty in 2010.
  • Trying to decide which service provider to go with on a new project? You will have time to consult with vendors and compare possible providers in the conference’s Resource Center.
  • You will solidify relationships with staff members from schools or employers with which your organization seeks to develop stronger ties. With decreased travel for OCI for many institutions, the chance to meet representatives from numerous organizations all in one place becomes even more important.
  • If you are a lawyer, you can take advantage of the conference as a cost-effective way to earn CLE.

Presentation:

Jeanne M. Picht, Director of Professional Development & Recruitment: "Partnering Together to Make a Successful Lawyer."  As we are faced with an ever-changing legal environment, now is the time to think creatively and collaboratively to ensure the success of our future generations of lawyers. Can law firms and law schools work together to manage expectations and better prepare those coming out of law school for life in law firms? Yes, and this interactive session will continue the dialogue between schools and firms to reach our common goal of collaboratively training the successful lawyer.
