    On May 17, 2012, the American Institute of Architects (the "AIA") released five new construction documents relating to sustainable project construction, or "green" related projects and an updated scope of services documents for LEED® Certification.  This e-alert is an introduction to the AIA contracts’ practical approach to sustainable design and construction.

    Since 1998, private owners have made the choice to incorporate sustainable design and construction practices in their buildings by following the LEED Rating System established by the United States Green Building Council (“USGBC”). Starting in 2003, federal agencies began requiring that all new construction within their particular agency achieve a certain level of LEED certification.  Since that time, 22 states have now mandated that public buildings achieve certain levels of LEED certification under the LEED Rating System.
